Poker Do's and Don'ts: A Brief Guide to Correct Poker Etiquette

Etiquette is an essential aspect of playing poker. Poker is not a helter-skelter game where everything is allowed. Observance of codes of behavior makes sure that the game proceeds smoothly and fairly. Regardless of where you play the game (online or offline), courtesies are expected. Poker etiquette refers to the expected set of behaviors when playing poker. How players act at the table separates the pro from the newbie, and if you show ignorance of poker etiquette, you might find yourself readily pounced upon by the poker sharks and pros.

Poker etiquette is, often, an unspoken rule, so you should learn them before sitting at a table. The following is a checklist of poker etiquette you need to observe.

1. Never throw your wager right into the pot. Set your stack of chips opposite your cards in front of you. This way, other players will be able to see how much you are wagering. The dealer will collect the bet before starting to deal the cards for the next round.

2. If hands are still being played, never show your cards. If you haven't folded yet, your hand will be considered dead. Why so? Because it might give one player a lead and ruin the pot for another. If you did it accidentally, do apologize. Neither should you discuss or give a hint about the cards you already folded or threw while a game has not yet concluded.

3. Abusive and profane words are absolutely a no-no. Avoid educating or giving advice to another player. Neither should you harass or criticize another player for a bad play.

4. Don't make other players wait too long before you act on a hand. Be aware of your turn to act; do not act when it's not yet your turn. If you want to fold, wait until it's your turn to do so. The same rule applies for calling, checking, and raising.

5. Remember to post your blind/ante when it's your turn to do so. Don't wait for anyone to remind you--- this slackens the speed of the game.

6. Tip the dealer and never harangue one. If you keep losing or getting a bad hand, do not blame the dealer. The dealer is just doing their job and has no actual control over the outcome of each game.
